The Legacy of Each School

  • Edward Waters University (1866, Jacksonville) Florida’s first HBCU, elevated from a seminary school, to a college and now a university, symbolizing more than 150 years of resilience and growth.
  • Florida Memorial University (1879, Miami Gardens)  Once Florida Memorial College, now a thriving university recognized for education, business, aviation, and music. It is also the Home of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the Black National Anthem.
  • Florida A&M University (1887, Tallahassee) The only public HBCU in the state, and a national powerhouse known for STEM, pharmacy, agriculture, business, and the world-famous Marching 100.
  • Bethune-Cookman University (1904, Daytona Beach) Founded by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, this institution grew from a school for girls to a full university, known for its nursing, business, and hospitality programs, as well as its legacy of service.
